Finger Ogham Forefinger
Each of the ogam characters has a specific place on the left hand, the consonants are positioned on the fingers themselves whereas the vowels are at the base of the fingers.
The consonants are representative of the different lunar months whilst the vowels represent the solar cycles. Five has always been seen as a sacred number traditionally associated with the goddesses and the changing cycles. It is seen as the number which represents the variety and colour of our three dimensional space representing our senses and the five elements: earth, air, fire, water and the soul, these in turn correspond with the seasons. The five tree vowels are known as the “Sweet Cauldron of the Five Trees” which are represented in Robert Graves’ poem.
Ogham Finger Divination
Finger Ogam was used as a form of divination, the left hand was held over either an object or a person and meditated upon. Where ever a vibration or tingle is felt this signifies the answers and circumstances regarding the question.
The tip of the forefinger is considered to be the most sensitive part of the hand and is known as rowan the diviner.
|Rowan||If any vibrations are felt on rowan it is to be taken as a warning that there is the need to defend yourself on a psychic level. Yet prewarned is prearmed and the neccesary precautions can be taken to avoid danger. It can also be meditated upon to enhance the powers of second sight and for protection against enchantment.|
|Oak||Oak is seen as the doorway to inner expression it allows one to see the invisible or in other words it allows the querant to look below the surface and see that which is not readily apparent.|
|Ivy||Ivy indicates the second harvest but has the duality of representing famine. This is seen as an indication of scarcity and the failure of plans. It reminds us of the changes that are necessary to ensure growth (and also of our connection with the living cycle)|
|Gorse/Furze||This represents the gathering of one’s strength and resources to withstand adversity. Don’t let minor obstacles stand in your path and let determination and focus guide you to your goal.|
